Eastern Subterranean Termite -
The
Eastern Subterranean Termite is the most common termite in
North America. Their colonies are primarily located under
ground. They are social insects and have 3 basic castes
within the colony which are reproductives, workers, and
soldiers. A colony will also contain eggs and nymphs. The
needs of the colony determine which caste nymphs will
develop in to. Each caste will perform different tasks for
the colony. Workers perform the work of the colony such as
nest building and food gathering. They are the caste that
does the damage to structures. Soldiers do not eat wood.
Their job is to defend the colony from enemies. The reproductives produce the offspring for the colony. They
do not eat wood so they rely on the workers to feed them.
In the spring of the year, winged adults (swarmers) will
emerge from the colony in search of an area to start
another colony. The swarmers are about 3/8” long and
black. Once they swarm, they will drop their wings, find a
mate, and return to the ground. Sometimes swarming
termites are confused with ants. There are 3 key areas to
look at in order to determine whether you have termites or
ants.
